George Cumberlege

Dear Sirs,

I am delighted to provide this recommendation for George Cumberlege in support of his application to your university and collegiate rugby program.

Having worked with George during his four years at Clayesmore School, I have had the opportunity to see him develop both as a rugby player and as a young man. He is an exceptionally talented and versatile rugby player who has the potential to make a significant contribution to a college rugby program in the United States.

George has benefited from a strong rugby background, having spent time within the Bath Rugby junior pathway as well as representing Dorset and Wiltshire representative sides. These experiences have provided him with exposure to high-level coaching and competitive rugby from a young age and have helped develop his understanding of the standards, discipline and commitment required to progress as a serious rugby player.

George is particularly accomplished across the backline and has demonstrated the ability to play effectively in a number of positions, particularly fly-half (10) and full-back (15). His versatility is one of his greatest strengths. He possesses an excellent skill set with both hand and boot, combined with a strong understanding of the game. His decision-making is particularly impressive, and he has the ability to assess situations quickly, identify opportunities and execute appropriate decisions under pressure.

George was part of the Clayesmore team that progressed to the National Schools Bowl semi-final, competing at a high level against strong opposition. His contribution to the team’s success demonstrated not only his individual ability but also his capacity to perform within a competitive team environment.

His attitude towards training has been consistently excellent throughout his time at Clayesmore. George is committed, coachable and willing to put in the work required to improve. He responds positively to feedback and has demonstrated a genuine desire to develop his game. Importantly, he understands that success comes from consistency and hard work rather than simply relying on natural talent.

George has also demonstrated that he is a very capable student-athlete. He studied BTEC Sport and achieved a Distinction, reflecting a high level of commitment and application to his academic work. He was reliable in meeting deadlines and consistently completed his tasks on time. His ability to manage his academic responsibilities alongside the demands of a competitive sporting program is a quality that should translate extremely well to the collegiate environment.

From my perspective as Director of Sport, George possesses many of the qualities I would look for in a student-athlete progressing to university: natural sporting ability, experience within high-level representative rugby pathways, versatility, strong decision-making, technical skill, commitment to training, coachability, academic application and a willingness to improve.

I believe George would be an excellent addition to a US college rugby program. He has the ability to contribute on the field, while his attitude and academic application should allow him to embrace the wider opportunities and demands of university life. I also believe that, with the quality of coaching and competitive environment available within US collegiate rugby, George has significant scope to continue developing and reaching his potential.

I am therefore very pleased to recommend George Cumberlege without hesitation. I believe he has the character, ability and potential to be a successful student-athlete, and I am confident that he would be a positive addition to both a university community and its rugby program.
